Residency Origins and Founding Leadership

The Vanderbilt Department of Emergency Medicine was founded in 1992 under the leadership of Dr. Corey M. Slovis, who served as the founding chair until July 2020. It quickly established itself as a national leader in education, clinical care, and research. Under the direction of Dr. Keith D. Wrenn, who joined the faculty in 1992 and was appointed as the first the residency program director, the program welcomed its inaugural class in 1993 with six residents and 10 faculty members and has since graduated more than 340 residents and fellows.

Today, The Vanderbilt Emergency Medicine Alumni Society on unites graduates committed to advancing our specialty and strengthening the bonds forged in training.
