Medical Student Education

Welcome to the Department of Emergency Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center!

Our Mission: To provide enjoyable but challenging educational experiences and deepen knowledge of emergency care.

Whether you are exploring a possible career in emergency medicine (EM) or applying to an EM residency, we are here to help you decide if emergency medicine is the right choice for you and guide you through the application process while teaching foundational EM knowledge and skills.

Goals of the undergraduate medical education program:

  • Provide emergency medicine educational experiences that are well-organized and student-centered
  • Offer evidence-based advising to students interested in pursuing careers in emergency medicine
  • Employ a scholarly approach in designing, conducting, and evaluating educational activities

Vanderbilt University School of Medicine students can participate in the Foundations of Medical Knowledge, Foundations of Clinical Care, and Immersion phases with the Emergency Department.

The VUMC Emergency Department offers pre-clinical, clerkship and post-clerkship opportunities (including the EM Advanced Clinical Elective) for Meharry students.

Visiting students can participate in the Emergency Medicine Advanced Clinical Experience, a four-week rotation in emergency medicine.

This program is designed to provide advice and support to senior medical students interested in Emergency Medicine residencies.

Why Emergency Medicine?

Whether your contribution to medicine will be made in emergency medicine or another specialty, emergencies occur in all areas of medicine and in everyday life (“Is there a doctor on the plane?”)

It is vitally important for medical students to have the tools to deal with common emergencies that will likely encounter during residency or even in life.
