Emergency Medical Services Fellowship
Learn to become an EMS expert
The Vanderbilt Department of Emergency Medicine offers a one-year fellowship in our accredited Emergency Medical Services Fellowship program.
Multiple Vanderbilt EMS faculty hold medical directorships at the Nashville Fire Department, Vanderbilt LifeFlight, Vanderbilt LifeFlight Event Medicine, Nashville SWAT and Nashville International Airport, among others, making for a comprehensive fellowship experience, covering all aspects of prehospital care.

Educational Curriculum
The EMS fellow will act as an Assistant Medical Director for the Nashville Fire Department, attending weekly QI meetings, developing and revising protocols, teaching prehospital providers during quarterly in-service events, and providing on-scene patient care utilizing the physician response vehicle.
The fellow will also have the opportunity to gain experience in helicopter emergency medical services while working with Vanderbilt LifeFlight, one of the premier aeromedical services in the country. The fellow may participate as an observer or full crew member on flights should they desire more experience in this area. The fellow will also participate in chart review and protocol development with LifeFlight and will have the opportunity to gain experience with interfacility transport medical direction with our ground ALS and Critical Care Transport teams.

Event coverage
Event coverage includes events at Bridgestone Arena, Nashville Sounds baseball, Vanderbilt athletics, concerts at multiple local venues, large mass gathering events such as Iroquois Steeplechase and CMA fest, as well as motor sports events including the NASCAR Cup Series at Nashville Superspeedway and the Music City Grand Prix.
Research opportunities
Faculty are involved in EMS-focused research projects and the fellow will participate in these projects as well as original research or a quality improvement project, supported by the research division of the Department of Emergency Medicine. The fellow will also attend an EMS-related national conference.
Clinical Activities
Fellows will receive a Vanderbilt faculty appointment and work in the Vanderbilt emergency department as Clinical Instructors.
