A native of Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Patten earned her BA in French and Italian languages and literatures from Washington University in Saint Louis in 2015 and her MD from Vanderbilt in 2021. While in medical school, she spent a year with the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society studying student burnout, trauma resuscitation, and organ transplantation. 

Dr. Patten was a general surgery resident at Vanderbilt from July 2021 to January 2023 before making the switch to emergency medicine. Her academic interests include education, ethics, and critical care.

She met her husband in Nashville and they now have a daughter, Jillian, and a German Shepherd, Elpis.
