Matthew Lipton, MD, is director of the Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography Fellowship Program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His current interests include critical care ultrasound, medical student/resident/fellow education, and quality assurance for point-of-care ultrasounds performed in the ED. In 2023, he obtained testamur status of the Examination of Special Competence in Critical Care Echocardiography (CCEeXAM) from the National Board of Echocardiography, which highlights his commitment to advanced education in critical care ultrasound.
Dr. Lipton is a California native who completed his undergraduate studies at University of California, San Diego where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry/Cell Biology. He earned his medical degree from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. During his fourth year in medical school, he was nominated into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society for his leadership abilities and his educational achievement.
After graduating medical school, Dr. Lipton completed his residency in emergency medicine at Vanderbilt. Following residency, he completed a fellowship in Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography at the University of Utah. Before returning to Vanderbilt, he was the Emergency Department Ultrasound Director for a busy community ER in Charlotte, North Carolina.
When not working in the emergency department, he enjoys snowboarding, hiking, golfing, and spending time with his son, daughter, and wife, Leah.
