Michael Johnston, MD, is Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His clinical interests include procedural sedation, orthopedic trauma, and palliative care.
He is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham and completed a residency in pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Alabama. He also completed a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. After several years as full-time faculty in pediatric emergency medicine at LSU, Dr. Johnston began his residency in emergency medicine at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, but was displaced due to Hurricane Katrina. He came to Vanderbilt to finish his final year of residency and has remained on faculty ever since.
He is married to Dr. Jill Gilbert, who is a member of the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology, at Vanderbilt. Outside of work, he enjoys eating New Orleans cuisine, music festivals, hiking, and Mount Desert Island, Maine.
