Stephanie Free, MD, is an Instructor in Clinical Emergency Medicine at Vanderbilt Health. She splits her time between Vanderbilt University Hospital and community sites including Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital and Vanderbilt Bedford County Hospital.
She grew up in St. Louis and completed her undergraduate education at the University of Kentucky (UK) in Lexington. During that time, she competed on the UK Dressage and Eventing Team with her horse Roman. She then completed her medical degree at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.
Dr. Free was thrilled to match into Emergency Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident during the 2025-2026 academic year. She has lots of family in the Nashville and middle Tennessee area and loved living in Nashville so much that she decided to stay on at Vanderbilt as faculty after graduating residency. Her professional interests include undergraduate and graduate medical education.
Her husband, Harry Free, is an emergency medicine PA working primarily at Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital as well as other regional sites. Together, they enjoy weightlifting, biking in Shelby Bottoms, traveling, and playing with their goofy border collie Winnie. She also enjoys sourdough baking, gardening, and walking through beautiful neighborhoods. Text her anytime to go on a walk together where she will point out all her favorite homes in East Nashville!
